The Oscars are coming. Glitz, gowns and gold statues a-plenty – in a month sadly lacking in glamour. Going to the cinema to see a good film is one of my favourite things – especially during winter. This years is the battle of the posh Brits. For my money the best performance by an actor was by Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. His portrayal of the nuclear physicist with Motor Neurone disease was brilliant. Poor old Benedict Cumberbatch must have thought that tackling the story of the shockingly badly-treated Alan Turing in the Imitation Game, that he was on to a sure-fire winner, then along came Eddie and blew him out of the water.
In the running for best female actor /actress this year (is it only Brits that say actor for females?) is Felicity Jones was great as Jane Hawking, Stephens first wife. Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl is also one of the other tipped front runners. Her performance as psycho girlfriend Amy was controversial, but very watchable.
Then there’s 50 Shades of Grey, out on Valentines Day. Will Sam Taylor Wood salvage something from the book that everyone loves to slag off but has read (even if only the first chapter)? I can’t imagine seeing Jamie Dornan or Dakota Johnson on next years nominee list, but I’m willing to bet it will be one of the most talked about films of 2015.
To finish off I’ve dug out one of my favourite quotes from a great Oscars host, Billy Crystal – “So tonight, enjoy yourselves because nothing can take the sting out of the world’s economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues.
